SAP Joins Apache Communities, Extending Commitment to Open Source Technologies

Participation in Independent Foundation Projects Helps Spark Developer Co-Innovation Supporting Standards and Customer and Partner Open Source Strategies

VIENNA, Austria – October 27, 2009 – Reaffirming its increasing commitment to proven and broadly used open source technologies, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) joins a number of projects at the Apache Software Foundation, an independent foundation focused on open-source software projects. Working together with the Apache community of developers and users, SAP plans to further support the development and use of open solutions to drive industry standards and empower the developer community with the tools they need to be successful. The announcement was made at SAP® TechEd 2009, the company’s largest ecosystem education event, being held October 27-29 in Vienna, Austria.

The Apache Software Foundation is an independent organization encouraging developers, users and technology vendors to contribute to its collaborative, consensus-based development process that strives to deliver high quality, freely available software products that attract large communities of users. SAP intends to contribute to several additional projects, including the Maven, VXQuery, Tomcat, OpenEJB and ActiveMQ projects, in an effort to enhance these technologies for use in future releases of the SAP NetWeaver® Application Server component.

“This is a great step forward. We are highly enthusiastic about further extending our reach into the community.” said Hervé Couturier, executive vice president (EVP) of Technology Development at SAP.

Further proving the support of open source initiatives, SAP announced in June 2009 a more active leadership role in the Eclipse Foundation (see “SAP Extends Commitment to Open Source, Increases Eclipse Membership Status and Joins Additional Eclipse Projects“). As a Strategic Developer member, SAP committed full-time development resources to various projects and is leading open source projects, ensuring direct input into the development and architecture of Eclipse. SAP plans to contribute to numerous projects, including the Eclipse Git Team Provider (EGit), the Eclipse Modeling Project (EMP), Eclipse Platform, Eclipse Mylyn, Eclipse PDE API Tools and the Eclipse Equinox Project. The Eclipse DemoCamp event held at SAP headquarters in Walldorf, Germany, in May 2009 attracted developers from various companies. Demonstrating the latest developments from assorted Eclipse projects and shared their experiences, the event attracted approximately two hundred attendees, making it the largest Eclipse DemoCamp to date.
